Dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty that primarily affects reading and writing skills. However Dyslexia does not only have impact on these areas. It can also affect working memory and the processing of information and it is the difficulties experienced in these areas that can impact on the acquisition of literacy skills. It can also impact on organisational skills.
However this is not the only side to the story. Dyslexic people often have incredible minds, seeing the bigger picture and approaching problems in a unique way. Many of the most brilliant minds were dyslexic and that includes Albert Einstein.
Checklists can not tell you if someone is dyslexic however they can give an indication of a person's strengths and areas of weakness. This can help build a picture of an individual and begin to explore what support may be able to put in place to help their learning.

Exam access arrangements give students with a disability including dyslexia the opportunity to show what they can do by creating a more level playing field. Students must undergo a rigorous process to determine if they meet the criteria for this. Students do not need a formal diagnosis of dyslexia to be provided with access arrangements but they must show that any arrangement they are given is part of their normal way of working.
